Who We Are

Welcome to Students For Education Reform! Founded in Spring of 2012, we are a newly launched, project-based student group working to close the academic achievement gap through research, advocacy, K-12 student mentoring, and more. Mission Statement: We aim to mobilize the next generation of leaders in the fight to close the achievement gap. Our members are writers, student mentors, policy advocators and leaders in the field of education. Join today in the civil rights fight of our generation



Executive Board


President: Yuhuan Fu


Yuhuan is a Fourth Year who majored in Cognitive Science in the College of Arts and Sciences and is completing his Masters in Public Policy at the Batten School of Public Policy here on grounds.  
Teacher quality & training are the his primary educational policy concerns as well as transitions into higher education for students. 

Vice President: Rachel Drescher


Rachel is a Fourth Year majoring in Economics. An education topic of particular concern to her is peer-evaluation of classroom teaching. She enjoys watching comedies and creating good food!









Membership Directors: Daniel Mulrow and Ejana Bennet

Daniel is a Second Year majoring in Chemistry with specialization in Chemical Physics. He is very passionate about the achievement gap in America as well as how math and science courses are taught in K-12. Outside of SFER, he is a brother of Phi Sigma Pi and is also involved in research.







Ejana is a Fourth Year, Psychology Major who is also completing the special education program at the Curry School of Education. The areas of education she feels most energetic about are elementary education, special education and ESOL programs. She is an RA on grounds and participates in an enrichment program with gifted education Kindergarten and First graders as well as the Princess Club which mentors young girls that like in Charlottesville's West Haven. 

Director of Events: Jill Ferguson 


Jill is a First Year, intending to be a Material Science Engineering Major and Public Policy Major. She believes in education reform through the integration of technology. "We should be rethinking the way we present information and evaluate teacher and student performance." In her free time she googles Michelle Rhee and reads her recent posts through Students First.







Director of Outreach: Mona Azadi

Mona is a 4th year majoring in Cognitive Science and concentrating in Neuroscience. The education topics she's most concerned about are the achievement gap, math/science education, SES diversity & achievement. Mona also religiously watches House Hunters + House Hunters International, frequents the Lindt chocolate store at Barracks and waxes philosophically about life.






Organizational Health Officer: Andre Sanabia

Andre is a First Year and intends to apply to the McIntire School of Commerce and minor in LGBTQ Studies. He is very passionate about peer-tutoring and mentoring groups as a way to reform reading, writing and mathematical literacy in schools. In his free time Andre is riding around on his broom for the Quidditch team or watching shows such as Nikita, American Horror Story and Dracula.
